Mall of America vs. DestiNY USA
For our project of researching Destiny USA and greenwashing, I was thinking about comparing America's biggest mall to date; The Mall of America. I want to research how the community felt about having a Megamall built in their communities. I think this information will help to predict how Destiny USA will affect Syracuse. According to the website http://www.ci.bloomington.mn.us/main_side/history/history.htm two years before the Mall of America was built, Bloomington's population was 86,355 (1990). But in the year 1998, 6 years after the Mall of America was built the population raised to 88,375. Also during this time the Mall of America was the biggest employeer, having employed 13,000 people out of the 98,300 people employed in Bloomington. Although the city of Bloomington had a increase in it's population after the Mall of America was built, its population has been decreasing. The population in 2005 was 84,347. Now I don't know if this has anything to do with the Mall of America but its just interesting to look at and by doing that we can possibly predict the same pattern for Syracuse after and "if" Destiny USA is built.

Hey,
I find it really interesting that the population of bloomington has been decreasing even though the mall is there. I wonder though what the cause of this is. I don't know if we really want to put to much research into it. But it I find it interesting...
There are alot voices saying that a huge establishment like DestiNY will only harm the locals of syracuse. If the tax breaks, news stories, investments, and attention are all on this "green city" who is going to care about the rest of the city. Also, there is much debate surrounding the job ops of a huge mall. I would be interested to find out if the popuation decrease is due to a lack of jobs.
I like how this comparison can raise more questions to think about. For instance what would happen to the Syracuse after this Green movement. Will there really be improvements to the city or will it divide Syracuse to two parts: DestiNY SYR and outer Syracuse? Is a population increase what Syracuse needs?
I'm not that interested in the divid between the green city and the city of Syracuse itself but the question of whether or not Syracuse is capable of supporting a structure like DestiNY. Currently the 481-81-690 interchanges in the city already are hard enough to get through with the traffic patterns of just the citizens of Syracuse and its suburbs commuting to and from the city. Is the community able to support as many as 40 million visitors a year? Everyone knows how nasty the city gets during the games at Carrier Dome. They need cops on every corner around campus to control traffic. The Pyramid Company would have to spend millions of dollars towards the city to allow the city to make itself capable of sustaining such a tourist base.
