Greenwashing and Destiny

Destiny USA is supposed to be a super regional shopping center." Its contractors claim that this "Retail City" will operate 100% without using fossil fuels. But many suspect that Destiny USA is greenwashing. Which is the act of misleading purchasers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service. According to Syracuse Greens, "Destiny USA subsidizes a private developer to be the city's planner. Its marketing hype about powering it with renewables does not change its basic character as anti-ecological monument to sprawl and consumerism that depends on exploiting cheap labor and natural resources the world over. Destiny USA would make Syracuse itself a barracks for low-wage workers who service upscale tourists." According to the Green Marketing Machine, for companies and corporations sometimes it's cheaper (and therefore better) to say you are going green, than to actually go green.

While it is hard to imagine a completely green DestiNY, if there is a DestiNY, it will have to be green. It is my understanding that the only reason Bob Congel can build this structure is because he is getting tax cuts for DestiNY's independence from fossil feuls. I also agree that building a mega-mall where the products are a result of an exploited ecosystem is contradictory. However, seeing as DestiNY will be the first green superstructure, if Congel succeeds DestiNY coud set an example. If investers can see that such a large structure can operate naturally, it is concievable that many other corporations would fall in line.

I really find it hard to believe that the Destiny projects is going green. I have nothing against it, but greenwashing is a term for a reason. We have seen in certain situations that what major corporations do to projects that start out eco-friendly. Maybe I'm being negative this might work, my thing is that don't lie to the people and call a project something it is not.

Its my belief that Bob Congel only is making Destiny USA a entirely "green" building because of the government funding available like Ashley alright stated. I don't know what if that is entirely bad though. As most people already know the economy is in the slumps. One of the biggest strains on the economy is profit-hungry oil barrens. If Bob Congel's motivation is to make money and the only way he can do it is by selling his "product" as being "green", as long as he actually makes the strides towards being green. There is nothing wrong with that. To do well while doing good isn't a bad thing. What if this research and development center comes up with some sort of alternative fuel that relieves this county's insatiable desire for petroleum product?

If you didn't know, the video you posted made an attack on Chevy for making an electric car back in 1999. Its actually funny that they mention it. I looked into hybrid/alternative energy vehicles a while back. Honda actually made a hybrid car, the Honda Insight, from 1999-2006 but this car was completely overlooked for many years. Not until recently when gas is over $3 a gallon are people looking into "green". I'm getting off topic...
